Books

The bibliography about Tahiti is abundant. Since first discovered towards the end of the 18th century (Wallis, Bougainville, Cook), Tahiti has become the source for inspiration and fantasies for a great number of writers. Following the return of the explorers, books often with rich illustrations are found describing the voyages and the discovery of this earthly paradise. During the 19th century books are written to satisfy the curiosity of the readers about this exotic island. Loti, Melville, Stevenson and Segalen are among those using Polynesia as the backdrop for their dreamy tales and adventures. In 1891, Gauguin arrives in Tahiti and begins to take note for Noa Noa and other scriptures about his sojourn. “Editions Avant et Après” lead by Gilles Artur are specialized publishers of books about this artist.

The 20th century not less rich in prestigious names is adding to the bibliography about Tahiti: Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad and Romain Gary.

As all privileged tourist destinations, numerous guide books have been written about the islands and some great picture books are available. Most of the material you’ll find at tahitibiblio.com or at Vaima Library in Papeete
