SAPINUS

Photo Gallery

Located south of the island museum (Musée des Iles). The left of Sapinus is in fact the succession of three bowls which are more or less interconnected. The first bowl is closer to the beach, and the third is farthest out. Up to 2 m, this spot comprises active sections and tubes. Beyond, the wave can remain good for surging up to 6 m but the bowls shift much and tugged surfing seems interesting, but reserved to the experts.

FAVORABLE WINDS

If the wind is feeble, less than 5 knots, all wind directions are good for surfing. For other conditions please find hereafter the wind directions with specifications.

South-East

  • Wind stronger than 10 knots : agitated water at the 2nd and 3rd bowl, quiet water at the 1st bowl.
  • Wind less than 10 knots. : quiet water at the 2nd and 3rd bowl becoming agitated towards midday. Quiet water for the whole day at the 1st bowl.

East South-East

  • Wind stronger of equal to 10 knots : in the afternoon agitate water at the 2nd and 3rd bowl, quiet at the 1st.
  • Wind less than 10 knots: quiet towards slightly agitated waters in the afternoon.

East to East North-East

  • Wind stronger of equal to 10 knots: agitated waters in the afternoon at the 3rd bowl, quiet at the 1st and 2nd.
  • Wind less than 10 knots: calm waters however slightly agitated in the afternoon if sunny.

North-East

  • Calm in the morning getting agitated towards midday.

SWELLS - GOOD TO SURF

South-South-East

  • Wave height in meters = (H1/3 in meters) x L x 0.4. For the calculation of the wave height, the coefficient "L" depends on the wavelength of the swell. Use 1 for short swell, 1,5 medium swell and 2 for long swell.
  • Wave height between 0.5 and 6 m good conditions.
  • Comment : Nice slow wave.

South

  • Wave height in meters = (H1/3 in meters) x L x 0.7
  • With a wave height between 0.5 and 6 m, the spot is good.
  • Comment : Nice slow wave.

South-South-West

  • Wave height in meters = (H1/3 in meters) x L x 0.9
  • With a wave height between 0.5 and 6 m, the spot is good.
  • Comment : Hollow waves.

South-West, West South-West

  • Wave height in meters = (H1/3 in meters) x L x 1
  • With a wave height between 0.5 and 6 m, the spot is good.
  • Comment : Hollow waves.

UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS

North to West swells create closing waves which break occasionally to the right. Those swells are not good to surf and make this spot dangerous if the waves are higher than halve of the height of the good waves. Calculation of the height of the waves for these conditions are

West to North-West: H = (H1/3) x L x O.8
North North-West to North : H = (H1/3) x L x O.9
